چکیده

We present fission cross-section measurements with 10ng of Pu performed using the LANSCE Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer. Results of Liðn; aÞ measurements with a sample size of 760 ng of Li are also reported. This technical achievement demonstrates the feasibility of measuring neutron-induced fission cross-section on samples with 10 ng of fissile actinides that are available on ultra-small quantities. Furthermore, results on neutron-induced alpha emission show that measurements for astrophysics purposes are feasible with the LSDS. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Fission Physics and Cross Section Measurements with a Lead Slowing down Spectrometer

A Lead Slowing Down Spectrometer (LSDS) provides a high neutron flux environment that enables measurements of small samples (∼μg) or samples with small cross sections (tens of μb). The LSDS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was previously used for fission cross section measurements and for studies of methods for assay of used nuclear fuel. The effective energy range for the LSDS is 0.1 ...

Measurement of Fission and Capture Cross Sections for Design of Transmutation Systems

The fission cross section for 237NP from a b o u t 1 eV to about 5 keV r e l a t i v e t o t h a t for 235U was measured with back–to–back type double fission chambers using an elec– tron linear accelerator (linac) driven lead slowing–down neutron spectrometer (lead spectrometer) . Although the shape of the present energy dependent cross section agrees with those of JENDL–3 (below 120 eV) and E...

Nondestructive Assay Measurements Using the RPI Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer

The use of a lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) is considered as a possible option for nondestructive assay of fissile material of used nuclear fuel. The primary objective is to quantify fissile isotopes, particularly 239Pu and 235U, via a direct measurement distinguishing them through their characteristic fission spectra in the LSDS. In this paper, we present several assay measurements perf...

Surrogate Measurement of the 238Pu(n,f) Cross Section

The neutron-induced fission cross section of 238 Pu was determined using the surrogate ratio method. The (n,f) cross section over an equivalent neutron energy range 5–20 MeV was deduced from inelastic α-induced fission reactions on 239 Pu, with 235 U(α, α f) and 236 U(α, α f) used as references. These reference reactions reflect 234 U(n,f) and 235 U(n,f) yields, respectively. The deduced 238 Pu...
